ft. Warawara from the Ghibli Studio movie The Boy and The Heron
This is a quick and simple recipe for making homemade marshamallows. The marshamallow recipe can be used to make any design/character you want but this recipe focuses on the Warawara seen in the Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron.
For ease, I’ve divided the ingredient list into parts.
Note: since this is a small batch, I highly recommend using a hand mixer instead of a stand mixer. You can use a whisk but it’ll be very tiring.
Instructions:
- Bloom the gelatin: sprinkle 1 tsp of gelatin over 1 tbsp of water. Give it a quick mix then set it aside.
- In a bowl, add the egg white and mix until it is frothy. Once it is frothy, add in half of the 15g of sugar. Mix it for a minute then add in the remainder. Continue to mix until stiff peaks form. Set this aside to work on the sugar mixture.
- In a small pot, combine 20g water, 10g corn syrup and 30g sugar. Cook this on medium heat until it starts to bubble. Once it bubbles, lower the heat to med-low heat and continue to cook for another minute, stirring occasionally.
- Immediately transfer the sugar mixture to the egg white mixture. Mix for 2-3 minutes on medium speed.
- Divide the marshmallow and dye into desired colours. For Warawara, we need white, black and red. Place the marshmallow in piping bags.
- Pour corn starch over a plate or a small tray. Pipe out a small ball using the white marshmallow. Continue to pipe little knobs of marshmallow at the sides for arms and legs. Then add a face using the black and red marshmallow.
- Cover the marshmallow in corn starch then brush off the excess.
- Give them a friendly squeeze then enjoy them as is or toss them in a hot mug of cocoa 🙂
