Calico Cat Cookies

Basic sugar cookies made fun

I’ve always found calico cats pretty and I happened to have cat cookie cutters. This recipe is a simple way to elevate sugar cookies, making them more unique and fun. It’s also a perfect bake for cat lovers!

Calico cats are a tri coloured cat. They’re typically white with orange and black spots.

Fun fact: calico cats are largely female. It’s rare to find a male one.

If you have a cat, please give him/her a treat on my behalf. Thanks 🙂

Ingredients

  • 240g all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 113g unsalted butter, softened
  • 100g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (52g), room temp
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • food colouring – brown & orange

Equipment:

  • Digital food scale
  • Hand mixer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring spoons
  • Baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Wire rack
  • Rolling pin

Instructions

  1. Cream together butter and sugar until it is light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix until it’s just combined.
  3. Add all the dry ingredients (flour, salt, and baking powder) and mix until it’s combined and a dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough into 3 portions – 1 large and 2 small. The large portion will be the white portion of the cat. The two small portions will be dyed with food colouring to create the spots on the calico cats. Dye one ball orange and dye the other brown.
If you want more colour on your cats, dye a larger balls of dough. If you want your cats to have smaller spots, dye less dough.

  5. Cover and refrigerate the dough for 1 hour.
  6. To create the dough: (see photos below)
    –
Roll out the large undyed ball of dough until it’s 1/4 inch thick.
    – Once rolled, rip pieces from the coloured dough and place it on top. These pieces can be large or small depending on how big you want the spots on the cats.
    – Scatter the coloured dough on top of the dough.
    – Once it is to your liking, cover the dough with a piece of parchment paper and roll it flat so the colours merge with the white dough then begin cutting shapes with your cookie cutter.
Note: DO NOT use all your coloured dough here. You’ll need it again in the next step.
  7. Once you’ve cut all you can from the dough, ball the remainder and roll it back out. Take the coloured dough and once again rip pieces of the coloured dough and place it on top. Cover with parchment paper and roll it back out and continue to cut out your cats. Repeat until there’s no more dough.
  8. Once all the cats are cut, refrigerate the cookies for at least 30 minutes. This will prevent the cookies from spreading once it’s in the oven.
  9. Bake at 375F (190C) for 10-12 minutes.
  10. Cool the cookies on a wire rack.
  11. ENJOY!
Tip: if your cookie cutter has small details (such as the feet and tail seen above), dipping the cookie cutter in some flour will help the cookie come out in one piece.
